Biography

Tom Bennetts graduated from Liverpool University in 1998 with a BSc honours in Geophysics. He spent 6 years conducting inshore geotechnical survey work for renewable market and coastal infrastructure developments. One such project involved working with Hrvatski hidrografski institute in Croatia shortly before joining Sonardyne. He has been located at Sonardyne headquarters in Hampshire England since 2004 as a Navigation Systems Engineer, managing the integration of navigation solutions on numerous offshore and nearshore projects. Experienced in USBL and LBL acoustic navigation systems and recent enhancements offered by INS and Doppler systems on autonomous vehicles. Currently he is working as an Applications Group manager ensuring technically pioneering Sonardyne products are embedded on customer vehicles correctly and the data interface exchange functioning optimally. Project delivery includes Acoustic modem control and positioning of swarms of AUV’s for wide area survey. The ability to control multiple AUV’s from ASV’s is a rapidly emerging market which demands novel concepts and a reliable platform which Sonardyne deliver. He frequently works with the National Oceanography Centre’s Marine Autonomous and Robotic Systems, embedding acoustic positioning, optical comms, Sonar, INS and control of Gliders over Iridium. Vehicle management from desk to seabed gateway solutions is a passion and he hopes to gain additional knowledge during Breaking the Surface 2018. Tom is a keen outdoors enthusiast willing to give most activities a go. He enjoys summer weekends sailing with the family and winters snowboarding and mountain-biking with colleagues.
