SHIELD project: INTRODUCTION

Acoustic detection of vessels and submarines by small, low-cost devices arranged in an Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) offers distributed sensing with easy deployment from moorings, vessels, or aircraft. Project SHIELD (Swarm of Energy Harvesting Floaters for the Detection of Vessel Threats) aims to design underwater drifters that acoustically detect surface vessels, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and diver-aid propulsion vehicles (DPVs). In the SHIELD workshop, the project’s PIs will present the developments achieved in the project and demonstrate some of the technologies already implemented in realistic scenarios. The scope will be:

1) algorithms for passive acoustic detection,

2) developments in energy harvesting, and

3) design of drifting mechanisms.
