The Digital Shadow of a Mobile Underwater Source Localization System

Source localization under water requires several ingredients: detectors, hydrophone array processing, multiple vantage points, and a capability to track the noise source over time. In addition, noise comes from unstructured processes as opposed to digital communication signals, hence the system cannot rely on the cooperation of the target. In addition to the above, energy consumption should be minimized whenever the system targets the longest possible endurance. In this talk, we will discuss a few ingredients of the digital shadow of an underwater source localization system that includes multiple mobile floaters, each of which relying on a small array of hydrophones. We will consider the tracking performance as a function of the floater topology, and show how localization is affected by the uncertainty on the floater location that results from rare reliable location fixes and imperfect IMUs.
