Low power autonomous detection of thruster noise for subsea security

This talk will describe ongoing work at Newcastle University to develop cost effective, low power, real time detection systems for the detection of thruster noise from surface and subsea vehicles posing threats to offshore infrastructure. First, background work on detectors for marine mammal signals will be described, followed by how they have been adapted for this new task. The properties of the target acoustic signals will be discussed, illustrated by example recordings, then the development of computationally light detection algorithms along with results of testing on experimental recordings from surface vessels and diver scooters. Finally, hardware implementation of these algorithms will be presented, ahead of a practical demonstration at BTS2026.
