Mate Parica

Mate Parica is an archaeologist and Associate Professor at the Department of Archaeology, University of Zadar, Croatia. Born in Zadar on 27 March 1980, he studied Archaeology and History at the University of Zadar, where he graduated in 2006. He obtained his PhD in Archaeology from the University of Zagreb in 2014, with a dissertation on the archaeological evidence of stone quarrying in Dalmatia from prehistory to the medieval period.

Since 2007, Parica has been working at the University of Zadar, initially as a junior researcher and later as a university lecturer and researcher. His research focuses primarily on maritime and underwater archaeology, prehistoric and ancient seafaring, stone quarrying and the transport of stone, as well as submerged prehistoric sites along the eastern Adriatic coast. He has participated in numerous archaeological surveys and excavations, both on land and underwater, particularly in Dalmatia and the Zadar region.

Parica has authored and co-authored numerous scientific publications dealing with ancient quarries, maritime infrastructure, prehistoric maritime structures and submerged archaeological sites. His recent research includes the investigation of submerged Neolithic sites in the Croatian Adriatic, including Soline on the island of Korčula and the area around Galešnjak. He is also the principal investigator of the research project Submerged Neolithic Sites in the Croatian Adriatic.

Through his research, fieldwork and teaching, Mate Parica contributes to the study and interpretation of the archaeological heritage of the Adriatic, with particular emphasis on the long history of human interaction with the sea.
