Biography
Dr. Ignacio Carlucho is an Assistant Professor in Robotics and Autonomous Systems at Heriot-Watt University and the National Robotarium, where he co-leads the Ocean Systems Laboratory. He obtained his PhD in 2019 from the National University of Central Buenos Aires, followed by postdoctoral research at Louisiana State University and the University of Edinburgh. Dr. Carlucho’s research focuses on reinforcement learning, multi-agent systems, and marine robotics. He develops intelligent agents capable of making autonomous decisions in complex environments without human supervision. A key application of his work is in the offshore renewable energy sector; by improving autonomy for subsea robotics, his research aims to replace crewed vessels and human divers, significantly reducing carbon costs and safety risks. He currently leads multiple industry-partnered research initiatives, translating his work into real-world applications to enable safer, more sustainable offshore operations.
