Biography

Patrizio Mariani is Professor at DTU Aqua (National Institute of Aquatic Resources at the Technical University of Denmark), where he leads research in ocean observation technology. His work focuses on the development and application of advanced technologies for observing, understanding, and managing marine ecosystems. His scientific expertise spans marine sensing, underwater acoustics, autonomous observation systems, underwater and surface robotics, ocean and ecological modelling, and data integration. Focus is on the integration of autonomous platforms, sensors, and modelling tools to improve the collection, analysis, and interpretation of marine environmental data. These approaches support more efficient and comprehensive monitoring of oceans, fisheries, and aquatic ecosystems.

At DTU, he is also responsible for the courses Underwater Acoustics and Applied Ocean Technology, supporting the education of students in marine observation methods, sensing technologies, and advanced ocean engineering applications.

He has extensive experience in interdisciplinary research connecting marine science, engineering, robotics, and digital technologies. Alongside his scientific activities, he has significant experience in research leadership, coordination of collaborative projects, scientific dissemination, and engagement with academic, governmental, and industrial stakeholders. He is vice-Chair of the European Marine Board and has served as President and Coordinator of EuroMarine, major European organisations and networks supporting collaboration and strategic development in marine science. His work contributes to the development of next-generation technologies for autonomous and integrated ocean observation with applications to marine research and sustainable ocean management.
